Before we decided to record an album, I was sitting in my room in Alhambra, strumming the top two strings of my little green UFO cow abduction acoustic guitar. The dark little groove I stumbled upon was my favorite thing I'd ever played. It felt dangerous and it felt right. The melody came quick like it does with the best songs. I wrote lyrics and I wrote lyrics. All kinds of lyrics. For weeks. One day, Cotton found an old drum machine and he cut loose with it as he often does when a new toy surfaces. In this case, it was an old toy (I think) and dude was making some seriously insane beats. I remember walking into the kitchen and dorking out on it for a bit with him. Then, it hit me and I suggested we marry it to the song that I was calling "Scared Coyote". Cotton picked up his guitar immediately and started playing it and...fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Just fuck. We recorded the song in our little red studio (where we did the whole album) with Cotton playing/perfecting the guitar parts, cuz duh...I can't play. Days later, I remember being in the back yard talking about a BigFoot podcast that myself and my filmmaking buds had just been on earlier that day (I made a BigFoot movie once). I could hear Cotton firing up the recording of "Scared Coyote" in the studio...then when it came to the guitar solo section, which had been empty up until now, I had to stop the conversation that I was in because I was hearing the most raunchy guitar solo I'd ever heard in my life. I ran into the studio and told him that he had just done it. And we had. I finished the lyrics days later and one of the two songs that would lead us into TheDarkWoods was born.
lyrics
I WANDERED OUT TO FAR IN THE MIDDLE OF A DAYDREAM
AND LOST THE SUN
AND WITH THE DARKNESS CAME THE IMMEDIATE FEELING
THAT I SHOULD RUN
AND THAT'S ALL
THAT'S ALL I WANNA DO
THE MOMENT I REALIZED I WAS ALONE AND THE WEIGHT
MADE MY HAIR STAND UP
I HEARD THEM DEEP DARK VOICES CALLING ME TO SOMETHING
THAT WASN'T LOVE
AND THAT'S ALL
THAT'S ALL I WANNA DO
I HEARD HIM WALK UP, THIS IS A STICK UP, I LAYED THERE
STILL AS A TREE
I SAW THE MAN'S BOOT, I FELT A SHIVER AND THEN
I HEARD A SCREAM
FOR UP ABOVE ME, JUST BEYOND ME, THE MORNING HAD
BROUGHT ANOTHER ONE
THE MOUNTAIN LION THAT HAD CHASED ME ALL THE WAY HOME
WHEN I WAS YOUNG
MY DUSTY TAIL STOOD UP I SWEAR, THE BLOOD
WAS ALL AROUND ME
HUMAN BONES BREAK, MY FOUR LEGS SHAKE, AND
THE LION TURNED TO ME
SON, GO BACK HOME, OUT HERE YOU'RE JUST A LITTLE
SCARED COYOTE
