Cotton had given me a collection of a bunch of ditties he'd been working up and the guitar part for Blood Red Sun was one that caught me. I listened to it over and over and a vocal melody grew sharp and fast. This was going on the record and it was going to be our story song. Our folk song. Our grizzled, beaten, cowboy battle song. I had been listening to one of the Bob Dylan Bootleg Series records that had a particular live version of "Ballad Of A Thin Man" on it. I was obsessed with it and this lagging dirge-y piano part that banged down on top of the song like exclamation points at the end of each phrase. We added something similar on top of Cotton's whirling guitar part and built it to a Comanche scream ending. Then, the craziest thing that ever happened...happened. We had recorded the song and it had no drums, no beat. We thought it would be cool if the beat could be footsteps walking into TheDarkWoods. Years before this moment and weeks before Cotton and I met up in Montana, Cotton had been hired by a studio to take a field recorder and build a library of sounds for them. He remembered this particular recording that he grabbed of himself tromping through the forest... He took the recording and placed it on the song. Without any tweaking, they fit. Perfectly. Way up in the Montana forest, Cotton had walked to the rhythm of a song that we'd write and record years later and call "Blood Red Sun".
lyrics
THERE'S A BLOOD RED SUN TURNING BLACK
ON THIS COLD NIGHT
HIS BODIES TURNING BLUE
SEEMS HE'S LOST THE FIGHT
HE'S BEEN A POISONOUS SNAKE
FOR 50 ODD YEARS
BUT, YOU'D BE A FOOL NOT TO TRUST HIM
AND HIS CRAZY FEAR
NOW AS THE SUN DIPS
BENEATH THE TREES
HIS MOUTH GOES DRY, HIS EYES GO BLIND
HE FALLS THROUGH HIS KNEES
IF THE DEVIL WAS GONNA TAKE HIM
HE'D TAKE HIM NOW
BUT, OLD GOD HAD PLACED HIS BET THAT HE'D
SURVIVE SOMEHOW
SO, HE SENT A GREAT BEAST
TO CLEAN HIM UP WHEN HE DIED
A GRIZZLY BEAR WITH DRIED BLOOD
CAKED DEEP INTO HIS HIDE
THE OLD SNAKE EYED HIM DOWN
AND ROSE TO HIS FEET
THE GREAT SILVERBACK WAS SURE
THAT HE WAS READYING TO RETREAT
BUT THE BLOOD HAD WOUND IT'S WAY
BACK INTO HIS HANDS
THIS BEAST WOULD HAVE TO KILL HIM
ALIVE WHERE HE STANDS
THEN GOD'S MAN CHARGED
AND THE DEVIL'S DID TOO
AND THAT BLOOD RED SUN WASN'T COMIN' BACK
FOR THIS CRAZY MOON
